This is a report on a residential project for the YOYO community at Chip Bee SUMMARY
This report is to propose the design concept for a residential development catering to the needs of the Young-Old-Young-Old (YOYO) community in the Holland Village vicinity. The information of this report was obtained through case studies, newspapers, online research and survey. The survey was conducted with the aim of evaluating the needs and habits of the YOYO generation. Generally, the YOYO generation enjoys a healthy and communal lifestyle and is also supportive to the mainstream idea of self-sustained apartments where durability and flexibility is taken into consideration for future needs. As such, the provision of airy and green spaces should be improvised and included in this YOYO residential project. In addition, based on the findings compiled and survey conducted, the YOYO generation desires a private indoor environment and also has a fad for outdoor social gatherings. The proposed location for the YOYO apartments is perched adjacent to the Chip Bee Gardens, in the heartland of the Holland Village. It is flanked by public streets on the two sides – a perfect setting to connect a wider community and it is also in correspondence to the concept of “embracing diversity”. Bringing the masses of people from the surrounding areas in the Holland Village is a guiding principle behind the concept of “Embracing Diversity”. The YOYO residence is being established as a node that will definitely help to create vibrancy to the urban fabric of Holland Village. On the other hand, in the pursuit of the baby boomers’ recreational and leisure interests, the design embraces various communal spaces to a single complex intervention, essentially a giant parallelogram that contains the shared kitchen, shared living, gym and other engaging secondary spaces. Moreover, having the welfare of every individual into account, the YOYO residence offers a variety of living options, ranging from bachelor-single living to family-of-four-bedroom-unit. In a nut shell, every unit is carefully organized with an ecological mind. SOCIAL NEEDS
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is a primary concern of the YOYO generation. It is an investment whose benefits grow over time. By adopting the art of being healthy and establishing a cohesive social bonding between neighbours, a healthy living is truly a long term investment. Hence, the apartments should be conducive to active and exuberant activities where neighbours can look upon as inviting grounds of interaction. As such, fostering of a sense of belonging and identity to the community, making people feel cared for, loved and valued. DESIGN CONCEPT
Massing is to further conceive to create harmonious scale relationships with the existing built environment. The elongated massing of the apartment responds to the longish form of the lot. It is aligned with the rows of existing trees. This succession of rustic details greets the visitors approaching the main entrance, which is a ramp. In form, the building consists of 2 interlocking v-shaped masses, which is a formal expression of integration of 2 blocks of apartments. The 2 arms of the building embrace the different social groups and communal areas, but at the same time, the concept echoes the idea of a homogenous community. The concept also involves interlocking various spatial programs to maximise the amount of usable space. EMBRACING DIVERSITY
Bringing the masses of people from the surrounding areas is a guiding principle behind the concept of “Embracing Diversity”. Hence, there will be strategized entrances corresponding to the site context: 1. Targeting the mass from the commercial area where Holland Road Shopping centres and shop houses are situated. 2. Entrance provided at the future circle line linking to the child care centre at the north wing of the building. 3. Entrance facilitating the human flow from the Chip Bee Gardens. On the whole, the first storey is a public zone engaging the neighbours. Hence a sense of movement, both in terms of pedestrian movement and vehicular circulation will be very much concentrated at this level. On the other hand, the dwelling units are all situated above 1st storey onwards, so as to minimise the intrusion of privacy. inspi'folio
